Who writes the exam? – National Board of Medication Therapy Management

Eligibility

• Licensed pharmacist in US of Canada
• 2 years of medication therapy experience in retail, community, Amcare
• Experience criteria waiver if MTM approved training program is completed
• OR MTM residency (PGY-1 or PGY-2)
• Application
• $450, re-test fee $200

About The BCMTMS Exam

• It has gotten more difficult to pass
  • 57-64% Pass rate (2023)
  • 81% Pass rate (2020)
• 4 testing windows per year
• Multiple choice (one correct with four possible choices)
• Four hours, 200 Questions
• Not graded as a percentage
• *IMO – Target at least 75% correct when taking practice exams
• FINISH THE WHOLE EXAM
  • Time yourself on practice questions so you make sure you know you can finish
• Anticipate not knowing some questions

The exam is divided into several key areas that reflect the competencies needed for MTM practice:

• Pharmacotherapy (largest percentage)
• Defining Medication Therapy Management and translating Medication Therapy Management Into Practice
• Pharmacogenomics
• Patient Care Advocacy
• Documentation and Billing

BCMTMS Exam – Preparation Tips

We’ve put together a comprehensive study guide that covers the entire content outline. It is listed on the NBMTM.org website as a resource for preparing for this exam. I outline many of the challenges and preparation tips in the video but here is a summary of thing that may help you:

• Ensure you are eligible to take the exam
• Give yourself enough time – most candidates will target at least 3-6 months of preparation
• Do practice questions
• Review the content outline, and/or use study materials that follow it (like ours)
• Don’t overlook non-clinical topics
• Target weaknesses
